If you haven’t been following the redistricting debate – here’s the CliffsNotes version:
- Republicans say the newly drawn congressional and legislative maps are are legal and competitive.
- Democrats contend the maps are clearly partisan, resort to “double-bunking”, and “pack” African-Americans into certain districts to minimize their influence.
- Both sides expect the maps will be challenged in court.
Damon Circosta, executive director of the N.C. Center for Voter Education , joins us on News & Views this weekend to discuss the redistricting process and why those squiggly lines that divide our counties are critically important ahead of 2012.
The Republican leadership is expected to hold floor votes on the maps next week. Then the federal courts or the U.S. Department of Justice will have to give their blessing.
