You can add Buncombe County Rep. Patsy Keever to the growing list of people upset by GOP Chairman Robin Hayes’ comments that he’s glad North Carolina shed thousand of state government jobs in June.
In Keever’s own district, 80 teaching assistants and 10 custodians lost their jobs last month with Buncombe County Schools because of budget constraints.
Keever, who appears on News & Views this weekend, said of Hayes’ remarks “it’s atrocious that anybody would take joy in somebody losing a job.”
The Buncombe County Democrat says the loss of public sector jobs will not fix an already ailing economy, and will not automatically lead to more job creation in the private sector. (The N.C. Budget & Tax Center has also noted that public sector layoffs don’t “rightsize” state government, they downsize the state’s economy.)
