Attending to the Good Jobs Deficit

This week the National Employment Law Project released an analysis of the country’s employment opportunities and the wages that these occupations pay. They found that the country is facing a deficit of good jobs as a result of the Great Recession.
Not surprising to those of us in North Carolina who have been following job loss and growth trends over the course of the Great Recession and more recent recovery period. North Carolina faces a growing jobs deficit of nearly half a million jobs . And the projections for the next decade suggest that the jobs created will be overwhelmingly low-paying.
Addressing the good jobs deficit is something policymakers can and should immediately get to work on. It will go a long way to alleviating families economic hardship and also address that other deficit–the budget one.
