The folks at Clean Water for North Carolina are hosting a statewide summit on “fracking” next month in Pittsboro. Sounds like it will be a good place to learn more about this frequently dangerous and destructive practice.

Where: Central Carolina Community College, Pittsboro
When: September 10, 2011, 1:30-5:30 pm
Cost: $15/person
Speakers include:
- Calvin Tillman, former mayor of Dish, TX and founder of Shaletest.org, discusses the impacts of rushing into hydraulic fracturing
- Dr. Avner Vengosh, Duke University, co-author of “Methane Contamination of Drinking Water Accompanying Gas-well Drilling and Hydraulic Fracturing”
- Carol French, farmer from Bradford Co., PA, talks about extraction and mineral rights leasing impacts.
- Rural Advancement Foundation Internationalis a nonprofit organization advising agricultural communities of their rights and opportunities.
- Dr. Simona Perry, Dickinson College, “Fractured Communities, Fractured Lives,” social, community, environmental impacts of natural gas development.
