Senate leader’s script writers gets silly

It’s always pretty easy to tell when state Senate Republican leader Phil Berger is reading from talking points produced by his staff (and no, I’m not simply referring to the moments his lips are moving in public).

It’s most obvious when he tries to lob gratuitious (but usually awkward) barbs at Governor Perdue. Take this one from this morning’s News & Observer in which he tries to somehow blame the Governor for the General Assembly’s boneheaded decision to screw up the state’s pre-Kindergarten program:

“Our children and all North Carolinians, need leaders willing to protect our state’s fragile economy – not career politicians who use kids as pawns to win the next election.”

Come on guys, you can do better than this. Setting aside that the man who uttered the scripted attack on “career politicians” has been running for office since 1994, what in the hell is he talking about? Certainly not the debate over providing pre-K to needy kids.

How in the heck does it “protect the state’s fragile economy” to slash services to those in need and add to the unemployment rolls?

As for the “using kids as pawns” crack, give us a break! This is the man who just got done screwing up an array of essential services to kids so that he could give a tax break to to wealthy individuals and giant, profitable multi-state corporations!

In North Carolina’s ongoing game of political chess, no one is willing to sacrifice kids faster or more frequently than Berger and his fellow “business friendly” conservatives.

Honestly, Phil, we know politicians have to “spin,” but you’ve got to be able to find better script writers than this.

Maybe this is Phil’s the emperor has no clothes moment, could he have spent much time looking in the mirror that morning? No, the reality is he’s the Ron Burdundy NC politics.

Rick Perry is using Jesus to be elected president and Bev Perdue is using the children to be reelected governor. Run for cover because both of them are crooks!!!
