Partisan hurricane disaster tours?

One of the most notable and disturbing aspects of the modern right wing’s approach to government is the drive to relate everything to politics and ideology. Want to work on war reconstruction in Iraq? Well then you better pass an anti-abortion litmus test.
Under this approach — everything is fair game for political and ideological warfare. It’s as if the right-wing politcos examine every single news event and ask themselves “Now, how would Fox News spin this?”
Another example of this is the right’s almost complete unwillingness to accept the legitimacy of elected officials with whom its adherents disagree. It used to be that opposition politicians would — especially when it came to matters of foreign policy and natural disaster – serve as the “loyal opposition.” They might disagree with the President, for example, buy they would at least treat him as the nation’s leader. Think of the way the Democrats rallied around President Bush in the early part of the last decade.
Not today, of course. No matter what President Obama does, you almost never see conservatives treating him or his office with respect. It’s pretty much 24/7 Rush Limbaugh politics — all hate and derision, all the time.
Now it appears we’re seeing the same thing in North Carolina. Over the weekend, the Republican leaders of the state legislature announced that they would embark upon a tour of the areas impacted by Hurricane Irene with…the Republican state Agriculture Commissioner .
Say what? You mean to tell us that even hurricanes will now be politicized? Berger and Tillis can’t even take a one day break from partisan politics to be seen with Governor Perdue in a position in which they’d have to acknowledge the legitimacy of her governorship?
What’s next? Will Berger and Tillis start having their own ribbon cutting ceremonies for new state facilities with Pat McCrory and Americans for the Prosperous?
Don’t bet against it.
