“Cesspool of sin” makes it onto a T-shirt

Love Asheville and hate homophobic comments? There’s a T-shirt for that.

An online company is now selling “Cesspool of Sin” shirts (and hoodies and hats) that poke fun at some not-so-kind words directed at Asheville by N.C. State Sen. Jim Forrester.

T-shirts are $15, and come in a whole array of colors. That’s Asheville’s City Hall in the background.

The “cesspool of sin” comment came out of the mouth of Forrester, the primary Senate sponsor of the Defense of Marriage Act that passed the state legislature earlier today.

He made the comment about Asheville during a town hall meeting he held last week in Gaston. He went on to talk about how North Carolina would become a target of “homosexual mischief” if there wasn’t a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriage.

Thanks to Mountain Xpress for letting us know about the t-shirts.

The marriage amendment will be on May primary ballots, so there are plenty of chances to show some cesspool pride until then.

UPDATE: An alert reader let us know about another “cesspool” shirt out there. Scroll down to comment from John if you want to order shirts, bags, etc. from CafePress with the design below on it.

Barry Smith of M2M Politics also caught up with Forrester yesterday and asked him some more about the cesspool comments. The post has a link to video of Forrester’s initial comments about why he thought Asheville was marinating in sin.

Here’s what Forrester said to Smith:

“It was kind of brought up in a church meeting we had and I don’t know what prompted me to say that, but I distinctly remember a couple of weeks ago they were all out baring their breasts and everything up in Asheville,” Forrester said. “They have a lot of very liberal people. They have a lot of homosexuals that live in the Asheville area.”

Cesspool of Sin is a great slogan, Senator Forrester! It makes great t-shirts for men and for women! It works well on bags, buttons, water bottles, and more, too! I love Asheville, but you, Senator, not so much.

Hey, if you live in Asheville and are proud of our new cesspool status, I read that local graphic artist Jeffrey Crawford has submitted a design that you can get printed on your choice of shirts at M.I.A. And, best yet, you can get them printed on t-shirts made here in Asheville. So, you can sport your pride and support the local economy with one purchase! Thanks, Sen. Whatsyourname!

P.S. Not tech savvy enough to figure out how to put a link to a picture of the design, but hopefully you can click or cut and paste or something here: http://ashvegas.squarespace.com/journal/2011/9/16/where-to-find-that-asheville-cesspool-of-sin-t-shirt.html
