Rep. Bill Owens “surprised” state budget he voted for meant teaching cuts in his district

But don’t worry – this Democratic rep says he “understands [1]” it now.  Gee, when you vote for a Republican budget that cuts millions of dollars from local school systems there are actually teaching cuts – what a surprise.  Glad Rep. Owens finally understands, although it’s a little late since he already voted.

At this point, with thousands of teaching layoffs around NC, the June pre-budget passing comments [2] of Republican House Speaker Thom Tillis are worth remembering – Owens sure took them to heart:

“We have a budget that restores all the K-12 education funding for teachers and teachers’ assistants. The minute that budget gets signed, those people don’t have to worry about being out of a job three weeks from now,” Tillis said.

Of course, the Republican  budget also did include $30 million [3] in funding for a bridge in Democrat Owens’ district.  Good thing Rep. Owens and the Speaker have their priorities straight.
