With the news yesterday that health premiums have increased (as they have for more than a decade [1] – both before the Affordable Care Act’s passage and after), it’s worthwhile to note this concrete and encouraging¬† jump in coverage.

Last week, the National Center for Health Statistics at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released information [2] about the number of young adults who have health insurance since the Affordable Care Act was signed into law. The survey showed that in the first quarter of 2011, the percentage of adults between the ages of 19 and 25 with health insurance increased by 3.5 points, representing approximately one million additional young adults.

This includes people like our friend Michael Byrus in Apex [3]who has been able to keep his health coverage because of the new law.

So, that’s one million people under 26 who now have health care because of the ACA in one of the most challenging and difficult economies for young people in decades.¬† That’s a health reform accomplishment to be proud of.
