It’s obviously incredibly early in the process — the misleading hate ads probably won’t begin for months — but some days you have to wonder if maybe the marriage discrimination people bit off more than they can chew with their proposed anti-gay marriage/anti-civil union constitutional amendment .
I sensed this last week when I spent an hour on the radio discussing the subject with local arch-conservative radio host Bill LuMaye and couldn’t even attract one hateful call. This is obviously an incredibly limited sample of the public, but I’m just not feeling the venom one might have expected.
Whatever the case, it’s clearly been a lousy few days for the amendment supporters. First, there’s the Elon University poll that shows that not only do most North Carolinians oppose amending the constitution to ban gay marriage and civil unions, but most actually support some kind of legal recognition for LGBT couples.
Then comes an announcement of from Tea Party congresswoman Renee Ellmers that she opposes the amendment .
And now, we learn that country music star and conservative icon Toby Keith is pro-LGBT marriage too .
Once again, it’s still very early and the pro-discrimination forces have an enormous built-in advantage (it would be one of the biggest upsets in state political history (and an historic national event) if the amendment goes down, but you’ve got to wonder now if maybe, just maybe, the Pope/Tillis/Beger/Stam foursome made an enormous miscalculation when they chose to take the state down this road.
