Florida prosecutors lose their minds

Maybe a lot of you are already aware of this remarkable story, but I confess that I just found about it today.

Florida prosecutors are trying 12 year-old Christian Fernandez as an adult for the murder of his two year-old brother [1]. I’ll say that again: prosecutors are trying a 12 year-old — a boy born in1999 — as an adult. The boy, who was himself born to a 12 year-old mother and has endured a dreadful life of abuse, faces life in prison.

It could be that the change.org petition on this matter [2] slants the story in Christian’s favor too much. I don’t know. But I do know that it is impossible to slant the story enough against a boy of 12 so as to make prosecution as an adult justifiable.

You owe it to yourself to read the petition and some of the news coverage links contained therein.  Maybe this story will make a few people think twice when we’re told once again for the umpteenth time that Florida is the state whose public policies we ought to be copying.
