North Carolina may be a battleground state in the 2012 elections, but it appears both political parties have their work cut out for them in winning over voters. [1]

A new poll by Elon University [2] finds 47% of respondents disapprove of the way President Obama is doing his job, compared to 43% who approve. And when it comes to Congress, more than 80 % of North Carolinians expressed unfavorable views toward the U.S. Senate and U.S. House of Representatives.

As for the ability of our elected officials to compromise and move the nation forward, voters had their doubts that either side was able to cooperate. Here’s an excerpt from Friday’s Elon poll:

In regard to Republicans:

70 percent perceive the GOP as uninterested in working with Obama
23 percent perceive the GOP to be interested in doing so

In regard to Obama:

55 percent perceive Obama as interested in working with the Republican Party
39 percent perceive Obama as uninterested in doing so

The candidate they would support in their district if the 2012 congressional elections were held today:

The Democratic Candidate: 31 percent
The Republican Candidate: 30 percent
Undecided at This Time: 36 percent

Almost half of those polled said they have been following news about the President’s jobs bill “somewhat closely.”

Two out of three North Carolinians  surveyed said they support increasing taxes on Americans making more than $1 million a year.
