Natural Gas – Bridge Fuel from Coal to Renewables?

An interesting development this week on hydraulic drilling for natural gas that raises serious questions about its contribution to the future energy mix in the country.
A US Department of Energy advisory panel, the Shale Gas Production Subcommittee, released its final report for public comment which includes 20 recommendations to address lax regulation of the gas industry, both at the federal and state levels, in order to protect communities and the environment.
One recommendation that stands out is a request for an immediate federal interagency effort to acquire and analyze data about the overall greenhouse gas emissions from natural gas. Scientific papers now show that greenhouse gas emissions from natural gas are far greater than originally thought, raising huge questions about whether it should really be considered a “bridge fuel” from coal to renewables. This analysis could change how many view natural gas’ environmental profile. Stay tuned.
