Perdue’s only hope

[1]One of the main reasons that progressives have always felt a little leery of Beverly Perdue [2] is their concern that she represents the politics of the past — the conservative, good ol’ boy wing of the Democratic Party that was/is more concerned about winning elections and holding onto power than advancing the causes of social, economic and political justice.

While she has done many good things as Governor, those fears have already been confirmed on more than one occasion during Perdue’s first 34 months in office. And they got another unwelcome boost today with the indictment of three people associated with her 2008 campaign [3].

Let’s hope that these new accusations are untrue, or at least, that they turn out to have been merely the result of stupid and careless record-keeping that took place far below the Governor’s pay grade.

But regardless of the final results of these cases, let’s hope most of all that this latest troubling development conveys the message to the Governor that her only hope for long-term success as the state’s chief executive (indeed for political survival) lies in a strong and decisive break with the brand of politics this kind of nonsense represents.

Perdue may have risen to prominence in the rough and tumble, insider political world in which politicians and their buddies in “bidness” could pull strings behind the scenes to make things happen. But this just ain’t gonna work in 2011 or 2012. Not only is it simply wrong, it’s lousy politics given that Pat McCrory has already occupied this turf.

So, today’s message to Governor Perdue: Run, don’t walk, to the good government progressives and demonstrate once and for all (and repeatedly) that you want to be of them and among them in the months to come and during the second term you hope to have. It’s getting late in the game, but sticking with the old strategy symbolized by today’s events in the Wake County courthouse is a sure loser.
