Update: Raleigh man guilty of impersonating ICE agent

A Raleigh man who posed as a federal immigration agent and plead guilty to federal criminal charges this week for running a scheme where he duped undocumented immigrants by telling them he could, for a fee, get them papers to stay in the United States.

Tommie Rand Pierce, 68, plead guilty in a federal court in Raleigh Monday to charges of impersonating a federal agent and fraud and misuse of visas, permits and other documents, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of North Carolina.

Federal officials think he may have duped as many as 265 immigrant by posing as a  U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency, and filed false paperwork with the immigration officials.

He often carried a gun, wore an ICE hat,  drove a car with police lights and told potential clients he deported those who didn’t end up paying him.

Federal authorities began investigating the case after an attorney with N.C. Justice Center, which N.C. Policy Watch is housed under, contacted them about Pierce’s posing as an agent.

Pierce was taken into custody after pleading guilty Monday, and will be sentenced at a later date.
