Did local GOP’ers jump on the wrong train?

There’s always something very amusing about supposedly connected politcos who attempt to sign up with the campaigns of front-running presidential candidates only to find that the train has run out of steam just as they climb aboard. Remember Al Gore endorsing Howard Dean eight years ago this month?
It’s hard not to chuckle as veteran politicans attempt to grab for the glory by bestowing “endorsements” that turn out to be worth absolutely nothing. This is especially true when it’s clear that the endorsers really don’t give two hoots about the substance of what the endorsed candidate is saying and are obviously just trying to pick a winner and cash in politcally.
It seems pretty clear that we’re getting to witness just such an occurrence here in North Carolina during the current campaign cycle with the recent endorsement of Newt “Round up the liberal judges ” Gingrich by North Carolina Art Pope-Republicans Tom Fetzer, Karen Rotterman and Kieran Shanahan. If you pay any attention to NC politics, you’ll have noted that Fetzer, Rotterman and Shanahan formally signed up for the Gingrich team just five days ago as part of state “leadership team.”
Now, today, with the ink on the deal barely dry, the national news is full of stories about new wacky/insane assertions from the Newtster and new poll results that show his campaign is collapsing faster than the subprime mortgage market.
Of course, the beauty for ambitious and cynical candidate-shopping operatives like the NC trio is that, with the state primary still almost six months away, there’s an excellent chance that not only will the Gingrich campaign be completely over by that time, it’s quite likely that few people will even remember it.
Indeed, by May, it seems more likely that Gingrich will be back safely ensconced at FOX Noise serving as some kind of election anchor/commentator interviewing Fetzer about his plan to endorse Mitt Romney in the upcoming North Carolina primary than it does that the two will be working together on a viable candidacy.
Hmmm. Come to think of it, maybe these characters know what they’re doing after all.
