As noted previously in this space , one of the more detestable aspects of the anti-gay amendment that will be on the North Carolina ballot this coming May is the tidal wave of hateful messages and outright lies that it will turn loose upon our airwaves, mailboxes and computer screens over the next 127 days.
Lynn Bonner of Raleigh’s News & Observer highlights one of the first volleys from the hate crowd today in Under the Dome . It concerns an extremely troubling and insensitive image produced by the so-called North Carolina Family Policy Council in the latest edition of the group’s magazine (see page 13) . The image shows a pair of heterosexual newlyweds with cross-hairs superimposed over them — apparently as part of the group’s dishonest/deranged effort to argue that same sex marriage is somehow a “threat” to “traditional” marriage.
It’s actually hard to know what’s scarier — the image itself or the almost poignantly uninformed articles that surround it. To read such convoluted “logic” as appears in the magazine is truly to take a step through the looking glass into a world of superstition and half-knowledge that one would ordinarily attribute to primitive or, at least perhaps, medieval societies.
The magazine (and the money and people behind it) make clear once again that there is no time to waste for caring and thinking people who want to resist the efforts of the theocrats who are now in full control of the American political right.
