Military families need time to care

There was good news for veterans and their families from the U.S. Department of Labor today. A proposed rule [1] will allow military family caregivers to take job-protected leave before, during and after their loved ones’ deployment. Implementing and expanding the Family Medical Leave Act’s (FMLA’s) military family leave provisions, the proposed rule will offer family members job-protected time off to care for veterans with serious injuries or illnesses and expands the definition of a serious injury or illness to include those that result from preexisting conditions. Recognizing that illnesses and injuries may arise even after service members return home,  the rule will allow caregivers to care for family members who have served their country, without the added stress of worrying about losing a job.
