Wake Commissioners to weigh in on gay-marriage amendment

Post on February 20, 2012 by 5 Comments »

Wake County Commissioners will wade into the debate over marriage equality at its meeting this afternoon.

Chairman Paul Coble requested the board vote on a resolution supporting voter participation in the May 8th Constitutional Amendment, that defines marriage as only between one man and one woman.

The proposed resolution before the commissioners not only supports voter participation, it also endorses the amendment:

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Wake County Board of Commissioners endorses the Marriage Amendment to the North Carolina Constitution which states that the only domestic legal union that is valid or recognized in North Carolina is marriage between one man and one woman; and BE IT FUTHER RESOLVED that the Wake County Board of Commissioners encourages voter participation on this important issue to be voted upon on May 8, 2012.

Back in December, Raleigh City Council went on record passing a resolution opposing the proposed anti-gay marriageĀ  amendment.

In 1967, the SC found that state laws banning inter-racial marriage were unconstitutional. At the time, 70% of Americans favored the ban. So, who will be the first to allow your civil rights to be determined by popular vote???? Our land is governed by the Constitution, not by the Christian Sharia Lynch Mob!

Wayne, this amendment will be struck down, as it is a violation of the 14th amendment. Any law that grants rights to one group and not another, or that restricts the rights of one group and not everyone, is a violation of this amendment. Unfortunately, those who oppose equality of marriage don’t understand that rules and laws are not sacred, but principles are.

Wow. So 4 Republicans vote for intrusive government that bans any legal domestic union that is not marriage between one man and one woman. That means no civil unions. Domestic partner benefits already offered by the counties of Orange, Durham, and Mecklenburg, plus those offered by the cities of Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Greensboro, and Asheville, will all be invalidated. Unmarried couples, both gay and straight, will no longer be recognized under the law, whether that concern custody rights or domestic violence protection or health care benefits. The kids that are a part of these relationships will be exceedingly harmed.

What happened to the personal freedom that the GOP so espouses?

I hope this is a wake-up call for all North Carolinians. These hypocrites need to be thrown out of office. Oh, and vote AGAINST on May 8th. Good grief.
