The double-Speaker is back at it

House Speaker Thom Tillis was back on the road again yesterday in what many people speculate is his extended pre-campaign for Kay Hagan’s senate seat in 2014. (Tillis did little to quash this speculation yesterday when he told New Bern’s Sun Journal that 2012 will mark his final campaign…for the state House).
As is normally the case with Tillis’ sit-downs with local journalists, he appears to have done his best to put a friendly face on the extreme and mean-spirited assault on all things public over which he continues to preside in Raleigh.
For instance, he did his best to pretend like support for Tryon Palace historical venue was a big priority for he and his anti-government colleagues — yeah, right.
He also launched into his usual double-speak on the topic of public education:
“’I am looking for better ways to do more for less,’ Tillis said in all state funded operations including education. ‘We can’t look to the taxpayers. We have to spend more efficiently.’
He said the state’s problems with education did not begin July 1, 2011 and efforts are being made by those in office ‘to get to a productive place, do the right things by these kids’ instead of supporting increasing costs for K-12 with decreasing results.
Tillis said N.C. Sec. of Education June Atkinson said she has a plan to increase the number of pre-kindergarten students by about 1,500 without additional money.”
This is, to put it politely, baloney. Here is a translation of what Tillis’ carefully chosen words actually mean:
“We are going to continue to underfund and de-fund public schools. Our hope is to make them so unappealing that even traditional supporters of public education will give up and come over to our side so that we can get about the business of turning all K-12 education over to churches and corporations.
I understand that the Perdue administration will be trying to squeeze some more blood out of turnips so that a few more kids can be crammed into overcrowded and underfunded pre-K programs. This too comports nicely with our plan to prove that publicly-funded pre-school is a socialist plot to undermine the family.
With any luck, we’ll have some more incidents in which overworked teachers try to help some four year-olds eat some vegetables so that our buddies over in the Pope-funded think tanks can blow it out of proportion and get some Fox News people screaming about it. That should help us with our ultimate objective of making sure that all children are raised by stay-at-home moms who are kept pregnant and house-bound without access to paid employment, contraceptives, public transportation, or higher education. Pray for us.”
