As filing deadline nears, some Dems sidestep showdowns

With just hours to go before Wednesday’s filing deadline, several key Democrats decided Tuesday to avoid squaring off in a primary contest against their fellow Dems.

Rep. Grier Martin [1] said he would not challenge his friend Rep. Deborah Ross [2] in District 34, where the two had been double-bunked by Republicans in the redistricting process. [3]

Commerce Sec. Keith Crisco also opted not to enter the race for Lt. Governor, where  two other Democrats Рformer state lawmaker Linda Coleman and current state Senator  Eric Mansfield Рhave already announced plans to run.

Rep. Rick Glazier [4], who had earlier planned to challenge incumbent Democrat June Atkinson for the State Superintendent’s post in May, will instead seek a sixth-term in the state House.

The Cumberland County Democrat said with Rep. Joe Hackney’s retirement and roughly 30 House members leaving the chamber, he had been strongly urged to use his energy to rebuild the Democratic strength in the House.

Here’s an excerpt from his statement:

“There are two ways in which I can continue to fight for children, teachers, and public education. One way, is to serve as State Superintendent, and the other way is to remain in the General Assembly, and use every skill I possess and all of my energy and time to work for the good of my district and North Carolina.

While I still have a keen interest in serving as State Superintendent, now is the time to re-build Democratic strength in the House of Representatives. It has never been more important for Democrats to unite, to fight, and to regain the majority.

My colleagues and I agree: if the current majority is allowed to continue to govern, in two years, we will not recognize our great state.”
