30+ school boards press to restore NC Teaching Fellows funds (video)

Over the last several weeks more than 30 local boards of education have gone on record urging state legislators to salvage the 25-year-old program, which offers partial scholarships to gifted high school students who agree to teach four years in North Carolina’s public schools.
Tuesday evening Wake School board member Deborah Prickett suggested they should not second-guess tough budget decisions made by state budget writers. But Dr. Jim Martin said that was exactly the board’s role:
“It is our charge to seek out and advocate for the resources necessary for the successful operation of our schools, making sure we have effectively trained teachers is one of those things we need to do,” said Martin. “It behooves us to advocate for this very important program.”
In the end, the Wake School Board approved the resolution 5-4 along a party line vote supporting the fellows’ program.
House Speaker Thom Tillis has indicated lawmakers may reconsider the section of the state budget that eliminated funding for this year’s freshman class and included language to eventually phase-out the program.
