Pope groups’ new effort shows Real Desperation

Today’s Fitzsimon File aptly names the latest attempt by the Pope Civitas and Americans for the Prosperous people to put a happy face on the state’s rightfully unpopular legislature as “Real Distortions.com,” but it’s clear that a lot of other names would also fit.
Real Delusions, Real Misrepresentations, Real Fact-Twisting, Real Prevarications, Real Falsifications, Real Whitewash, Real Whoppers and Real Shameless would all fit the bill as well.
So would “Real Desperation” since it’s patently clear what’s driving this latest effort to alter the well-deserved image of the General Assembly — namely, the fear of an electoral disaster this fall.
The right knows that it has overplayed its heavy hand and is now desperately trying to clean up its image. Much like Art Pope’s own personal P.R. tour from a month or so back, the anti-government right is now doing everything in its power to soften up its image by spending a bunch of corporate money on a TV campaign that features a pleasant-looking woman talking (misleadingly, it turns out) about teachers. This from the same people whose intellectural leader in the House of Representatives admittedly wants to abolish public schools!
I’d like to say that “you can’t make this stuff up,” but I won’t because you obviously can make it up; the Pope people just did exactly that.
