Obama denounces Amendment One

President Barack Obama has joined a growing list of voices opposing the North Carolina’s proposed constitutional amendment banning gay marriage. Cameron French, the North Carolina Press Secretary for Obama for America released the following statement Friday: [1]

“While the President does not weigh in on every single ballot measure in every state, the record is clear that the President has long opposed divisive and discriminatory efforts to deny rights and benefits to same sex couples.  That’s what the North Carolina ballot initiative would do – it would single out and discriminate against committed gay and lesbian couples – and that’s why the President does not support it.”  – Cameron French, North Carolina Press Secretary, Obama for America

The statement lit up the Twittersphere, but should not come as much of a surprise. Last September [2], the President criticized  the passage of  the proposed anti-gay marriage amendment when it was passed by the Republican-led General Assembly.

The Obama administration has declared the Defense of Marriage Act unconstitutional and has strengthened the enforcement of same-sex hospital visitation rights [3], something the critics of Amendment One worry could be threatened if the ballot initiative passes May 8th.
