With less than a month before voters go to the polls, Greenville City Council voted Monday evening to reject Amendment One, the anti-gay marriage amendment that will be on the ballot May 8th.
Council Member Marion Blackburn told the chamber:
“It is a human rights matter, and we cannot afford to be on the wrong side.”
Councilman Calvin Mercer sided with Blackburn saying the state could not bestow holiness to any union, adding that the “government needs to get out of the marriage business.”
In his remarks, Councilman Dennis Mitchell called the proposed constitutional amendment “archaic.”
