In a potent reminder of just why we need excellent newspapers who employ strong investigative journalists, the News and Observer and Charlotte Observer are releasing a fascinating series of stories this week about hospitals, their operations and how they charge and pursue people for bills.  While focused on NC, the series sheds light on what are fundamentally national problems.   If you are at all interested in health care, reining in costs or the role nonprofit hospitals play in our communities then reading this series is absolutely required (two more articles are coming tomorrow and Thursday):

North Carolina’s urban hospitals pile up the cash [1]

Despite tax breaks, some NC hospitals deny care to poor [2]

Triangle hospitals plague financially distressed [3]

The Charlotte Observer focuses even more on the practices of local hospitals today:

Hospital suits force new pain on patients [4]
