‘A funny thing happened on the way to constitutional discrimination…’ (video)

Chris Fitzsimon writes in his Thursday column an increasing number of people from all walks of life are speaking out against Amendment One in the final days leading up to the May 8th primary. Here’s an excerpt from “The shrinking support for discrimination [1]“:

“Prominent business people, Republican and Democratic political figures, clergy members, civil rights activists, and community leaders are joining the growing chorus of voices opposing the amendment.

Powerful commercials with real people talking about the impact on their lives of the broad and ambiguous language in the amendment are now reaching voters across the state.

Families and children will lose health care. Domestic violence protections may be threatened. Wills and trusts and visitation rights could be affected.

News reports are reinforcing that frightening reality, that this amendment does far more than ban same-sex marriage in North Carolina.”

And the latest to speak out is Dr. June Atkinson, the state superintendent of public instruction.

Asked about the proposed constitutional amendment in light of the anti-bullying law [2] passed by the General Assembly in 2009, Atkinson acknowledged they continue to combat bullying in the public schools, and this vote will send a message.

“As adults we need to set a good example. And for that reason, I believe it’s not in the best interest of our children and our state for the amendment to pass,” said Atkinson on Thursday.
