Tillis family values

If anyone is looking to sublet some office space in the legislative building, you may want to contact Speaker Tillis – he has a few empty desks that he might be willing to part with. Not that I’m implying anything else is for sale in his office.

Yes, Tillis is probably a bit lonely in his big, fancy office this week after the resignation of his Chief of Staff [1] and Policy Adviser [2], both for having affairs with different lobbyists who represent a range of different interests under consideration at the General Assembly.

Sound shady to you? Speaking as a registered lobbyist, it sure sounds shady to me.

For those of us who spend time at the GA, these revelations [3] are both surprising and saddening. Many of us know some or all of the players in this Greek tragedy, and it is difficult to accept that this behavior was happening right under our noses. It is saddening to see so many once-bright careers tarnished in such a public fashion, and it is especially saddening to know the pain that was caused to so many families in the process.

The obvious hypocrisy of Speaker Tillis forcing his idealized vision of traditional marriage and traditional family down the throats [4] of North Carolina, while failing to maintain even the faintest notion of decorum within his own office, is certainly a reasonable political point to make. However, the larger question that begs to be asked is how on earth did this happen without Tillis being aware of it? The Speaker says he was unaware of either of the relationships [3], but I find that hard to believe. Raleigh is not a big town, and the capital gang is smaller yet. Remember, we’re not talking about one ethically-dubious relationship, but two – in the same office.

Just think about how much you know about your co-workers.

Regardless of the Speaker’s level of complicity in this sordid affair, perhaps the silver lining to the entire fiasco will be that people will think long and hard and ultimately vote against Amendment One [5] next week, knowing that the man who claims the moral high ground on family values has just smacked into it in a most undignified manner.
