Will Mecklenburg become the first to repeal benefits?

Hours after the passage of Amendment One, Mecklenburg County Commissioner Bill James is urging his colleagues to repeal the county’s policy that provides domestic partner health insurance benefits to employees in same-sex relationships:

And from Facebook:

In a Wednesday morning email to the county manager, James writes:

‘Now that Amendment one has passed it obviously is illegal to offer this benefit as there is now only one ‘domestic legal union’ recognized in the state.’

The constitutional amendment voters approved Tuesday makes marriage between a man and a woman the “only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized” in North Carolina.

The benefits have been offered by Mecklenburg County since 2009.

Amazing in light of this map showing Mecklenburg County’s majority voted against Amendment 1:

I’d like to think this is a tongue in cheek tweet, since I thought I read it wasn’t effective until Jan. 1, 2013. But knowing that he’s a ‘Republican, I’m not sure.

Also look at super close margins in these Counties: New Hanover (Yes only by 329 votes) Guilford (yes by only 68 votes) and even Forsythe County closer than rest of “yes” counties, with Yes at 53% to 47%.

As sad and disappointed as I am that the amendment passed, I am even more disgusted and disheartened that this backward bigot won his primary race – especially since I have the good fortune to be in his district.

Marriage between one man and one woman is the only domestic legal union that shall be valid or recognized in this State. This section does not prohibit a private party from entering into contracts with another private party; nor does this section prohibit courts from adjudicating the rights of private parties pursuant to such contracts.

This section does NOT prohibit making contracts. The benifits are not illegal.

When someone says “Oh, he’s a Republican” or “Oh, he’s a Democrat” to basically point out that the person is wrong or an idiot in essence because of their political affiliation makes you an idiot. Anyone that says this doesn’t get any respect, nor deserves it. Political affiliation has nothing to do with anything. The whole system was created and is used to provide a way for groups to be against each other. Is one person’s beliefs ignorant because he is black? I don’t think so. Use your brain before you point out someone’s party to make them look bad. Both parties have idiots and it has nothing to do with it.
