The Fracking Truth

Earlier this year the US Energy Information Administration [1] downsized projections of available natural gas in US shale deposits by 40% – so it was just a matter of time before the wild projections for North Carolina would be scaled back too.

State geologists [2]now believe that those projected 40 years of our state’s natural gas needs are probably more like five years, concentrated in only a few counties – Lee, Chatham and Moore.  The U.S. Geological Survey is expected to issue a more definitive estimate of our state’s natural gas resources sometime this year.

The demonstrated environmental impacts from fracking mania around the country, information that gas reserves in NC are closer to groundwater than in many other states and the scaled back estimates of available reserves should be the death knell for fracking in North Carolina.

After all these negative indicators, State Senator Rucho and his allies continue to push fracking, wasting our tax dollars and precious time needed to scale up proven technologies such as renewable energy as well as energy efficiency and conservation programs – all which could make a serious dent in climate change.
