One of the surprises tucked inside the House’s $20.3 billion state spending plan was funding reserved for House Bill 1104 , a proposal that would give corporations tax breaks in exchange for scholarships to private schools.
Rep. Paul Stam introduced the bill last week noting it would offer scholarships valued at up to $4,000 to low-income children who want to attend private or religious schools.
Though its merits have yet to be discussed in committee , more than $617,000 was earmarked for the legislation in the budget bill that passed the House late Wednesday.
Jo Ann Norris, director of the Public School Forum of North Carolina , says it’s troubling that as school districts are still struggling with less than adequate funding, some legislators would rather send public tax dollars to private schools.
Norris joins us on News & Views this weekend to discuss the education budget and future funding for the N.C. Teaching Fellows program.
