Together NC: Backwards budget relies on one time money, fails to fully fix last year’s damage (video)

Members of the General Assembly get back to work on the budget this week. And while House lawmakers have found some money to scale back the discretionary cuts made to education last year, some Senators are uncertain they can sustain those reductions beyond next year.
Rob Thompson with Together NC says the House’s revised budget proposal for FY 12-13 is only a slight improvement from last year, and doesn’t really move North Carolina in the right direction.
Thompson says North Carolinians need to revisit the depths of last year’s cuts to and then examine this year’s numbers to fully understand that the budget falls short of meeting the state’s need for quality education, health care, and other public investments:
“You look at NC Pre-K where last year they cut around $32 million out of the program,” explains Thompson. “This year, they’ve restored $15 million of that cut, but that still doesn’t mean there wasn’t a substantial net cut over the two year budget.”
Thompson appeared on News & Views with Chris Fitzsimon over the weekend to discuss the need for new revenue and a balanced approach to budgeting.
