It might be Monday morning or later in the week, but the US Supreme Court is expected to rule on the health care law soon.
Millions of North Carolinians have a great deal riding on what the Supremes decide. If the law is completely overturned seniors and people with disabilities on Medicare will lose better prescription drug coverage and freedom from copays for preventive services. Kids will no longer be guaranteed they can stay on their parent’s plans and children will not be protected from being charged more by insurers because of preexisting health conditions. Small businesses will lose tax credits for providing coverage and people in NC’s federal high risk pool will look at their coverage ending soon.
One thing to remember – if all the Supreme Court does is overturn the individual mandate – the requirement to buy health coverage before you get sick – all the other provisions of the law like drug help for seniors, tax credits for individuals and businesses, requirement that insurers still pay most of the premium dollars they collect to actual health care will all go forward. We can fix the overturning of the responsibility requirement, but if the entire law is overturned, there are plenty of people who will be hurt.
