The Republican-controlled House and Senate were successful in overriding Governor Perdue’s veto of the state budget Monday evening. It’s the second year in a row the majority has turned back the governor’s objections to their spending plan.
Republican Rep. Nelson Dollar described the legislature’s conference budget this way:
“This is a good horse. It may not be a thoroughbred, but it’s a good horse.”
Six Democrats – Reps. Dewey Hill, James Crawford, Derren Jackson, William Brisson, Marcus Brandon, and Marian McLawhorn – broke with their party to override the governor’s veto.
Other Democrats complained that the House was being bullied by Senators threatening to go home at the end of the evening, leaving in place even deeper cuts from last year’s budget.
House Minority Leader Joe Hackney told the chamber this budget would only serve to make the state less competitive moving forward, while forcing public schools across North Carolina to operate with $190 million less in FY2012-13 than they had in FY2011-12.
