Senate overrides two of Governor’s vetoes

It took the NC Senate less than an hour to override two of Governor Perdue’s vetoes on Monday. [1]

First the Senate overturned Perdue’s veto of Senate Bill 416 [2], the Racial Justice Act repeal, along party lines, 31-11. Senate President Phil BergerĀ  called the bill a “backdoor attempt to end the death penalty.”

The second override was Perdue’s Sunday veto [3] of the fracking bill.

The 29-13 vote came despite emotional appeals by Senators Floyd McKissick and Ellie Kinnaird for lawmakers to be “exceedingly cautious” and make sure the necessary safeguards were in place before permitting this controversial type of drilling.

Both measures now head to the House for consideration.
