New batch of charter schools get interviews this week

Thirty groups hoping to open charter schools in the state will be going before the Charter School Advisory Council this week in the interview round of the approval process.

More than 60 schools put applications in to the N.C. Department of Public Instruction, with 30 flagged to go onto the interview round of review.

The schools are applying to open in the 2013-14 school year, with a year of training for school years built into the application process.

Committee interviews over the next three days are open to the public and being held at the N.C. Department of Public Instruction building, 301 N. Wilmington Street in Raleigh.

The advisory committee will pass on their recommendations to the N.C. Board of Education, the state board with the power to grant the school’s a charter and send taxpayer dollars to the privately-managed schools.

DPI staff hoped to have a live audio stream (available here [1]) of the meeting available over the Internet, but was not expected to work for the Monday afternoon interviews because of technical issues. (We’ll update the post when it’s up and running).

Charter schools are public schools that students attend tuition-free, but are run outside of the purview of traditional school districts and governed by a non-profit board of directors. The state lifted a 100-school cap on charter schools in 2011, opening up the state for a rapid expansion of the schools.

The schools are a key component of the school choice movement, and allow families to choose whatever education option works best for their families.  But critics have raised concerns that the schools aren’t held to the same standards of traditional public schools and have more racial and socio-economic segregation than the state’s 115 public education districts.

DPI has put up each school’s application on its website, available here [2].
