Today a new study is out showing that in states that expanded Medicaid health coverage to low-income people fewer low-income people died . For most people, the idea that providing decent health coverage to someone who was formerly uninsured would reduce the chances of them dying is a no-brainer. And expanding Medicaid to the poorest people in each state is exactly what the Affordable Care Act does. After the Supreme Court decision upholding the ACA, states will now have the option not to expand Medicaid – but this will mean more people will die in their state. My guess is that this study will just reinforce what most states are going to do anyway – expand Medicaid to all low-income people not just because the feds will pay most of the costs, but because it is the right thing to do.
