As charter schools grow, advocates stress oversight, accountability (video)

The North Carolina State Board of Education meets this week on Wednesday and Thursday and could vote to allow more than two dozen charter schools to open across the state.
Matt Ellinwood, policy advocate with the NC Justice Center’s Education and Law Project , says if the board approves all 25 schools up for consideration, it would represent more than a 33% increase in the number of charter schools since the legislature voted to lift the 100-school cap last year. (Nine schools have already been fast-tracked to open this fall.)
Ellinwood, who appeared on News & Views with Chris Fitzsimon last weekend, says there are concerns about whether the state has the resources to efficiently monitor the expanding pool of charters.
While charter schools are considered public schools and funded with public tax dollars, they are also independent of local school boards and freer to experiment with different curricula and alternative teaching methods.
