National poll shows growing support for gay-marriage (video)

A new national survey [1] by the Pew Research Center finds growing support for marriage equality among Democrats nationwide. The poll, conducted June 28-July 9, finds nearly two-thirds (65% ) of Democrats favor gay marriage, compared to 24% of Republicans. Among Independent voters, support has also grown substantially since 2008. Today more independents favor (51%) than oppose (40%) gay marriage.

The results come as Democrats prepare to endorse a pro-gay marriage plank [2]for their national convention platform in Charlotte this September.

Stuart Campbell, director of Equality NC [3], believes even though North Carolina  passed a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage in May, momentum is on the side of those who support equality for LGBT families.

Campbell, who appears this weekend on News & Views, says their organization will be working to support candidates – regardless of party affiliation – willing to work against workplace discrimination [4] in the short-term while seeking over time to repeal Amendment One.
