The Raleigh political world was buzzing this week about a post [1]Tuesday night by Nate Silver of New York Times on his Five Thirty Eight blog about the presidential race in North Carolina.

Silver said that he thinks North Carolina is “only the 13th most important state in this year’s election,” and that the closeness of the polls here means the Obama campaign may eventually pull out of the state.

We aren’t likely to see either campaign pull out of the state before the Democratic convention in early September — but unless the polls in North Carolina begin to show leads for Mr. Obama on a more consistent basis, it will probably be among the first on the chopping block.

Silver’s comments were widely distributed by conservatives in North Carolina in the Twittersphere and elsewhere.

But they are simply wrong, according to Democratic National Committee Chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz. Schultz made the comments in an interview for next week’s News and Views radio show.
