Back in 1995 our own NC State Representative Henry Aldridge made this claim:
“The facts show that people who are raped – who are truly raped – the juices won’t flow, the body functions won’t work and they don’t get pregnant.”
Which sounds just like this weekend’s latest contribution from Rep. Todd Akin, a Republican who is running in Missouri for the Senate. He said that victims of rape rarely become pregnant because:
“If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down.”
I’m always amazed at the persistence of extreme views like these among conservatives with regard to women’s health. It’s one more instance of how making up the facts you like to support your position has become an accepted part of our current political discourse.
