State control, drilling off the Carolina coast central to Romney’s energy plan

With running mate Paul Ryan in Fayetteville [1] today, Republican Presidential hopeful Mitt Romney is in New Mexico touting his plan to make the nation energy independent by 2020 [2].

The Romney-Ryan plan would empower states to establish the processes and permitting programs for all forms of energy development on federal land within their borders.

The 21-page white paper released Thursday suggests that states are better equipped to regulate energy development than the federal government. Romney notes that it only takes 27 days to get a drilling permit in Colorado; the wait is just 10 days in North Dakota.

Romney’s plan would “aggressively open” new areas for offshore drilling beginning with areas off the coast of Virginia and the Carolinas.

The report also calls for modernizing complex statutes with an end to repetitive reviews, and regulations that are “carefully crafted to support rather than impede development. ”

Environmental groups like the Southern Environmental Law Center [5] have repeatedly cautioned against oil and gas exploration in the Atlantic,  pointing out the huge risks to wildlife, coastal resources, and the state’s tourism industry.
