Wage gap afflicts women in all 13 NC congressional districts

The National Partnership for Women and Families is out with a new study that examines the nation’s wage gap for men and women [1] and, not surprisingly, the results remain pretty grim.

“An unprecedented analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data shows that the gender-based wage gap affects women in nearly every corner of the country. In 97 percent of congressional districts — 423 out of 435 districts — the median yearly pay for women is less than the median yearly pay for men. This is the first-ever analysis of these data by congressional district, providing a unique opportunity for women, families and lawmakers to consider the local impact of disparities in pay.”

While not the worst in the country, North Carolina’s situation is still dismal.

“In North Carolina, the median pay for a woman working full time, year round is $33,459 per year, while the median yearly pay for a man is $41,950. This means that women are paid 80 cents for every dollar paid to men, amounting to a yearly gap of $8,491 between full-time working men and women in the state.

Nationally, women working full time, year round are paid just 77 cents for every dollar paid to all men. Women of color experience even greater disparities. African American women are paid 64 cents and Latinas are paid just 55 cents for every dollar paid to white, non-Hispanic men.”

Here are the statistics for the state’s 13 congressional districts:

District Percent of Men’s Median Pay Amount Lost per Year 3
District 1 79 % $7,507
District 2 85 % $5,519
District 3 79 % $8,386
District 4 76 % $14,556
District 5 81 % $7,784
District 6 73 % $12,492
District 7 76 % $9,540
District 8 83 % $6,491
District 9 76 % $13,236
District 10 74 % $10,844
District 11 85 % $5,609
District 12 76 % $9,619
District 13 88 % $4,739
