44 NC lawmakers earn an absolute zero on the 2012 NCLCV Legislative Scorecard

The NC League of Conservation Voters (NCLCV) is out with its 2012 Legislative Scorecard today.

The group describes the recent short session as toughest for North Carolina’s environmental community since the 1970s, noting that the current General Assembly leadership has pursued an unprecedented and aggressive anti-regulatory agenda, including a move to:

• fast-track the legalization of untested hydraulic [1]
fracturing;
• roll back rules to clean up key drinking water
supplies;
• prohibit the adoption of policies regarding sea-level
rise for four years;
• pass a budget which cuts funding for the Clean Water
Management Trust Fund by 90% and dismantles and
underfunds the Department of Environment and
Natural Resources; and
• undermine our health-based air toxics program.

Since 1999, the League has handed out only four “zero” scores on its scorecard. This year during the 2012 Short Session, 44 legislators earned zeros. That score is based on how lawmakers vote on key environmental bills.

It’s also worth noting that the average score in the House for the 2011-12 session was 42%, down from 67% for the 2009-2010 average. The state Senate average was 31%, compared to 69% in 2009-2010.

On a positive note, 29 legislators earned a perfect score on this year’s scorecard.
