Lower tuition, higher standards for student-athletes in spotlight as UNC-CH searches for next chancellor (Audio)

A UNC-CH committee tasked with finding a new chancellor for the state’s flagship university holds its first meeting this afternoon.
Chancellor Holden Thorp, whose tenure has been marred by several athletics-related scandals , announced last month that he will resign June 30, 2013.
While a number of faculty members and the UNC-Chapel Hill Board of Trustees have asked Thorp to reconsider , former UNC-system President Bill Friday says it’s appropriate for Thorp to leave the post, allowing the school to “turn the page” on this chapter.
Looking ahead, the 92-year-old wants stronger requirements for student-athletes put in place. And Friday, who spoke with N.C. Policy Watch over the weekend on News & Views, hopes the next chancellor (as well as the UNC Board of Governors) will speak out more forcefully about the need to keep tuition low:
“I’m really concerned what we’re doing is making the price and ability to pay the first standard that must be met by young people to go to college. That’s not what built this state,” warned Friday. “We can’t raise it [tuition] another dime.”

Monday’s meeting of the search committee will be held from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Rizzo Center in Chapel Hill.
