On Wednesday, the University of North Carolina will host a public memorial service [1]for President Emeritus William Friday in Memorial Hall on the UNC Chapel Hill campus.

Friday, who led the state‚Äôs university system for 30 years, never missing an opportunity to remind elected officials and policymakers of North Carolina’s constitutional commitment to providing access to high-quality, affordable higher education to students.

Former Governor Jim Hunt [2] calls Friday “one of the great men in history” who worked hard to make good and right things happen:

“What he’d want us to do is step into his shoes and to walk forward, and to have big bold ideas,” said Hunt.

Hunt, who joins us this weekend on News and Views, says the best way to keep Friday’s legacy alive is to build our university system, our community colleges and public schools.

Hunt is among the featured speakers at Wednesday’s 10:00 a.m. service.
