The UNC Strategic Directions Committee [1] meets again today as they continue to chart a proposed course for the University of North Carolina system for the next five years. The group is tasked with helping assess North Carolina’s current and future workforce needs, and recommending degree attainment goals.

Critics have pointed to the committee’s conservative make-up [2], with members who have in the past advocated for big budget cuts for the UNC system and the privatization of education.

Hannah Gage, [3] immediate past chair of the UNC Board of Governors, says the process is intended take an honest look at existing programs and more effectively link college with careers that meet the needs of the state’s future economy.

Gage joined us last weekend on News & Views with Chris Fitzsimon to discuss ‘misunderstandings’ about the committee’s mission, UNC’s move away from a growth model, and the need for more student financial aid.
