A raft of good editorials on the gun crisis

If only our elected leaders would listen to some of the wise words from the editorial boards of our leading newspapers. Here are just a few from this morning:

The Charlotte Observer [1]:

“America should confront both issues. State and national legislators need to reverse the trend of cutting back on mental health funding, so that the mentally ill have a better chance of diagnosis and treatment. Congress also should improve the background check system for gun purchases and ban access to weapons and magazines that allow shooters to get off dozens of rounds in a minute.”

The Asheville Citizen-Times [2]:

“In this state, purchasing a gun may soon be on par with casting a vote, if the new administration has its way with Voter ID legislation. Might we not examine that there might be a better way to do business?”

The Fayetteville Observer [3]:

“We’re not about to suggest repeal of the Second Amendment (which we support) or otherwise acting to prevent the lawful, responsible use of firearms. The Founding Fathers, and the courts after them, have made their case about that.

But we do believe it’s imperative that we refine our laws to reflect what is responsible. Making our nation better-armed is not the answer. We already are an armed camp, and becoming more so all the time. The problem is that guns are easily available to people like Newtown shooter Adam Lanza, or James Eagan Holmes, who killed 12 and wounded 58 in a Colorado theater in July.

There has to be a way to keep guns out of those unbalanced and dangerous hands. Let’s all check our emotions at the door, sit down and find a way to do it.”
