Stephen LaRoque’s lump of coal appears came in the form of a superseding federal indictment this year.

LaRoque, the former Kinston lawmaker, had four additional charges tacked on to a superseding indictment handed down Dec. 20 by a federal grand jury related to his management of two federally-funded non-profits. LaRoque ran the economic development non-profits for more than a decade, and federal prosecutors think he paid himself a more-than-generous salary while using money from the USDA-funded non-profits to buy his wife replica Faberge eggs, a Greenville ice-skating rink and cars.

The additional counts accuse LaRoque and his wife of understating his income on his federal tax forms. His trial is scheduled for February, and his lawyer, Joe Cheshire of Raleigh, has said that LaRoque is innocent of the charges.

WRAL has the new 75-page indictment up on their website here [2].
