2012 highlights a year of environmental change, with more on the horizon

As we look back at some of the top news stories of 2012, WhichWayNC.com has a great rundown of many of the environmental rules targeted by the legislature over the last 12 months.
From developing the framework for hydraulic “fracking” to a legislative proposal that would have prevented lawmakers from considering the impact of sea-level rise on the state’s coastline, to eliminating environmental rules to make the state more ‘business-friendly’ – it’s been a year of significant changes.
So what’s ahead for 2013?
“A key question will be whether or not [Pat] McCrory will be independent of the legislature on environmental issues or a rubber stamp,” said Molly Diggins, state director of the North Carolina Sierra Club. “Obviously, we’re rooting for the former.”
The lengthy post at WhichWayNC.com includes video interviews with Diggins, N.C. League of Conservation Voters director of government relations Dan Crawford, State Rep. Pricey Harrison (D-Greensboro), State Rep. Chuck McGrady (R-Hendersonville), N.C. Chamber of Commerce’s vice president for government affairs Gary Salamido, and many others.
For his part, John Skvarla, the new Secretary of Department of Environment and Natural Resources, has pledged to protect the state’s environment and bring a new era of “customer service” to the department.
